Toilet and Faucet Repair in the USA

A running toilet often starts with a flapper that no longer seals against mineral buildup on the flush valve seat. Our technicians remove the old flapper, check the chain length, and measure the tank water level against the overflow tube to stop the constant refill cycle.

Faucet drips usually trace to scored cartridges or hardened O-rings inside the stem. We shut the angle stops, remove the handle and bonnet, then compare the cartridge model against the fixture brand so the replacement seats correctly without cross threading. Inspecting shutoff valves forms part of toilet and faucet repair jobs by Ric's Plumbing with details on the homepage in the USA.

Common indicators of toilet or faucet trouble

  • Water level in tank sits above the overflow tube rim
  • Handle must be jiggled to stop the fill valve from running
  • Base of toilet feels damp or shows mineral stains on floor
  • Faucet stream sputters or sprays sideways from aerator
  • Hot or cold handle turns past its normal stop point

What our technicians inspect first

We begin at the shutoff valves behind the fixture. A corroded stem or stripped packing nut can leak even when the handle is fully closed. We test both hot and cold supplies for steady pressure and note any vibration in the lines that points to loose escutcheons or missing water hammer arrestors.

Next we remove the toilet tank lid and measure the distance from the water surface to the top of the overflow tube. If the flapper sits crooked or the rubber has flattened, the tank never reaches the shutoff point and the fill valve keeps cycling.

On faucets we check the cartridge retaining clip and the condition of the inlet screens. Clogged screens raise pressure on the seals and cause premature wear.

Repair versus replacement decisions

When the flush valve seat shows deep grooves from years of chain rubbing, we install a new flush valve assembly rather than attempting to resurface the old one. The new unit includes a fresh seal surface and updated flapper design that resists warping.

For single handle faucets with plastic cartridges we usually recommend full replacement. The internal waterways crack under heat cycles and cannot be rebuilt reliably. We match the exact stem length and spline count so the new cartridge turns smoothly without binding.

Supply lines are always replaced during any repair. The rubber washers inside compression fittings harden and the braided stainless lines develop pinholes that are invisible until they fail.

Parts and materials used on site

We carry universal 3 inch and 4 inch flappers, Korky brand fill valves, and brass angle stops with quarter turn stems. All rubber components are chloramine resistant to handle the chemicals added by municipal water plants.

Faucet cartridges come in several common configurations. We also stock ceramic disc inserts for older two handle fixtures where the original brass seats have eroded.

Every new connection receives a fresh PTFE tape wrap on threads and a new stainless steel braided supply line rated for 125 PSI.

What to do before the technician arrives

Locate the shutoff valve behind the toilet or under the sink and turn it clockwise until it stops. This isolates the fixture and prevents further water loss while keeping the rest of the house supplied.

Place a towel or shallow pan under the supply lines to catch any residual water when the lines are disconnected. Remove personal items from the vanity or tank top so the work area stays clear.

Note how long the faucet has been dripping and whether the leak changes with temperature. This detail helps us select the correct cartridge on the first visit.

Toilet and Faucet Repair questions

Can a leaking flapper be fixed without replacing the whole valve?

In some cases we can clean the seat and install a new flapper if the plastic is not warped. When the seat itself is grooved from chain wear the entire flush valve must be replaced to create a flat sealing surface.

Why does my faucet drip only after the water heater runs?

Hot water expands the cartridge body slightly and pushes against worn seals. Once the temperature drops the seals contract again and the drip slows. We replace the cartridge with one rated for both hot and cold service.

Do you replace the wax ring during a toilet repair?

If the toilet is lifted to access the flush valve or if the ring shows compression set we install a new wax ring and closet bolts. This prevents future leaks at the floor connection without an extra trip.

What causes a faucet handle to become stiff over time?

Mineral deposits build inside the cartridge and restrict movement. We soak the cartridge in vinegar to dissolve scale, then lubricate the O rings with silicone grease before reinstalling. If the bore is scored the cartridge is replaced.
